Up here is a vintage Mabie Todd Swan Self-filling Eternal #48 ETN fountain pen, which was manufactured in USA circa 1910s.

This is an ultra rare pen, largest size of the series, jumbo senior maxima. The pen is length 5-1/2 inches closed, cap diameter 5/8 inches.

The pen is in nice condition, only some brassings on the gold trim; and some wears due to age.

It is in royal black hard rubber, without any discoloration, very rare to find in the market considering its age with over 100 years.

The pen is superbly detailed, with ‘SWAN’ signature all around. On the pocket clip is the patent date ‘1915’; and the imprint on the barrel is impressive with patent dates as early as 1904. At the barrel end is the model number embossed ’48 ETN’.

The pen bears a jumbo large SWAN #8 14ct solid gold nib. A new ink sac has been fitted to the pen. The self-filler system is in perfect working order. The pen has been serviced and tested for its full functionality.

This stylish SWAN is a fine example of Mabie Todd – The pursuit of excellence. This Swan is a classic elegance and has been produced to the highest standards of craftsmanship. This would make an excellent gift to treat yourself or for someone special.

Mabie & Todd Co Ltd was started circa 1845, when Henry Todd and John Mabie combined their business for the manufacture of pen holders, pencil cases and the other related products. Around 1878, the company began its production of fountain pens.

The ‘Swan’ pen trademark is first adopted in 1884.

In 1909 production of pens is begun in England and the tradmark ‘Swan, the pen of the British Empire’ comes into use. Eventually, ‘Swan’ became another word for ‘pen’ in the popular lexicon.
Around 1923, the firm began production of its line of ‘Eternal’ pens, featured the lever fillers. These were very solid and well made pens, with several attractive colours available.

Till now, Swan fountain pens are highly sought after by collectors around the world.
